Curated Digital Content

There are a lot of big names making a move into digital content. Two of note are News Corps iPad only paper and Bransons Project. I’ve had a few thoughts on this move over the last month or so. While I wait for the first issue of Project to download I’ll work some of them into this post.

First and most obvious, this 5 minute download needs to go away. Build on that it downloads pages so I can start on the first page almost instantly and it’ll keep grabbing pages in the background while I read.

Git rid of the boundaries. Why when I first open Project does it show three seemingly identical issues. Showing US, UK and Canada versions. Can I buy any of them? Why is there different versions? What is different? At LEAST make it obvious. The only boundaries should be language at this point.

For a Magazine or Paper to truly work in the digital age it has to update more then once a day/week/month (which ever applies). I get that the Freeps is issued once a day, I can deal with that old model for now when I get the morning paper but this is REALLY going to be an issue when it’s digital only.

I think something like flipboard tiles for each section of the paper would work and update them throughout the day. Some sort of highlighting of unread content would be nice too. Maybe publishes can move to this model and use stats from the digital release to filter and format the content when the go to print on the next dead tree version!

Well since I’m out of points for now and I still can’t read this thing yet I think I’ll go grab my lunch! I’m sure I’ll have more thoughts in the future. Comments?
